Kineo–Traveller RhyoliteWhere a Maine toolstone turns up across North America

About the evidence

A personal project rooted in a connection to Katahdin, exploring where Kineo and Traveller rhyolites appear and what their movement might tell us.

The corpus brings scattered publications together. Material identification can be visual, chemical, tentative, or disputed. A Kineo label does not establish a unique quarry, a direct journey, or trade: local glacial cobbles and other forms of movement remain possible.

Reading the map

The scope is North America. Current observations are concentrated in the Northeast because that is where the corpus began; empty regions do not establish a limit. Reported reach includes community accounts, historical publications, and other geographic claims while their underlying evidence is investigated.

Pins represent documented named localities using geographic reference points. Their placement is not an excavation coordinate. Each mapped observation explains its location basis. Published locations are used where supported; explicit confidentiality requests are retained.

Reading the records

Rows may describe one artifact, an assemblage, a collection, or a general statement. Multiple publications can overlap. Counts and dates retain their original scope; period filters match mentions and do not resolve competing chronologies. Identification methods are not confidence scores.

A working corpus

This is a preliminary evidence atlas, not a finished study. It preserves gaps and conflicting accounts and links to sources so that the evidence can be checked. The Connections view is a small experiment in assumptions, not a reconstruction of an established trade network.

Corrections and new sources

If a record is wrong, a locality is misplaced, or you know of a source that belongs here, email ashtonwilliamallen@gmail.com. Each record also has a Suggest a correction link with its ID filled in. Please include the citation, page and a link where you can. Suggestions are checked against the source before the atlas changes.
